What they accept

The New Quarterly publishes short fiction exclusively by Canadian writers — citizens, residents, and First Nations, Inuit, and Métis writers — in two reading periods, February 1–April 30 and July 1–September 30, with a cap of 150 fiction submissions per period. It states no length restrictions but typically publishes 2,500–5,000 words and rarely more than 6,000, and it pays $400 per fiction piece plus a contributor copy. Simultaneous submissions are accepted with prompt notice of acceptance elsewhere, and responses arrive about six to seven months after a period opens.
